When placing your child in care with another person, whether it is a relative, friend, child care center, or family child care home, it is important to feel comfortable and trust your child will be safe and have a good experience. Just like there is no perfect parent, you will also find there is no perfect caregiver, so when you choose child care, look for qualities that are most important to you. Recognize that differences can add to your child's experience, while also making sure your caregiver shares your philosophy on caring for children. Below are some tips to help you in your search for child care.

 

Personality

  • Is the caregiver warm, friendly and open?
  • Is she calm and welcoming?
  • Is there a sense of safety and general well-being?

 

Environment

  • Is the environment safe and clean?
  • Is it well kept and orderly?
  • Are there enough toys and are they age appropriate?
  • Are the toys and equipment well maintained?

 

Interaction

  • Observe the caregiver's interactions with other children.
  • Is there adequate supervision?
  • Ask about the method of discipline.

 

References

  • What do other families have to say about their experience with this program?
  • Are the children in care long term, or is there frequent of turnover?

 

Experience

  • Ask why the caregiver has chosen this occupation.
  • What are the credentials and experience?
  • Is training current and on-going?
