Metro Child Care Resource & Referral (Metro CCR&R) offers parent seminars designed to help parents acquire new skills to overcome the challenges of parenting today. We offer a wide variety of specific topics as well as designing seminars tailored to meet the needs of an individual group.

We schedule many trainings every month in a variety of locations in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties. You can pay and register online for any of our classes.

We offer on-site parent seminars for a variety of groups and locations:

  • work sites
  • child care centers
  • parenting groups
  • conferences

Our friendly staff will help you choose a topic from our list of workshops or tailor a topic to fit the needs of your group. We can also provide assistance in advertising your workshop and registration of participants.

Workshop Topics
Below are descriptions of particular workshops we offer to the public. Parent seminar topics can be designed to fit your group's needs for time, location, presentation and other specifications. Your seminar can be schedule evenings, weekends, or weekdays. Prices vary depending on the topic, and what level of assistance your group will need from our staff.
Group rates average between $25 - $40 per participant.

Home Alone -
Children in Self-Care

Designed for families thinking about self care for their children. Learn to assess your child's readiness to stay home alone; basic safety tips; and learn how to prepare your child to be home alone. Family workshop - Children Encouraged to attend.

Communicating with
Your Young Child

Learn the importance of good communication skills in family relationships and on children's self-esteem; common barriers to communicating with children; and techniques for effective listening and responding.
Developing Responsibility
and Independence

Explore the seven "R's" of responsibility; learn how to encourage dependable behavior and focus on ways to apply the concept of natural and logical consequences.
The Do's and Don'ts of
Disciplining Toddlers

Understand toddler's behavior; the relationship of child development to behavior management; learn techniques for creating a home environment that encourages positive behavior; develop discipline strategies that will work well with toddlers.
Parenting Styles that
Work with Teens

What to expect from your teen; there basic parenting styles; and how each influences relationships with adolescents and strategies for developing and effective parenting style.
Resolving Conflict
with Teens

Understand reasons for, and value for, confrontations and conflict; set guidelines for negotiating rules; distinguish between teen-owned and parent-owned problems and apply strategies for managing both; experience increased self-confidence as a parent and an improved relationship with your teen.
Parenting for Higher
Self-Esteem

Understand the development of self-esteem and its impact on your child's future; learn about the importance of your role in shaping your child's self worth; strategies for helping your child feel good about him/herself.

Disciplining Young Schoolage Children

Learn about the relationship between discipline and development; strategies for setting rules; encouraging cooperation; building responsibility and creating a positive environment.

Fatherhood
Recognize the impact of social history, the media and past father/son relationship on you and your own children; set personal goals for your role as a father; and learn strategies for becoming an involved, effective father.

Managing Your ADD/ADHD Child's Behavior at Home
Identify the challenges of dealing with a child who has ADD/ADHD; review characteristics of ADD/ADHD; identify sources of support; learn strategies for managing your child's behavior in specific situations at home; and develop a plan that targets behavior.

Successful Step families
Understand the complexities of step families and how they differ from traditional nuclear families; key issues relevant to structure and daily life and child-related issues; practical suggestions regarding step parenting.

The Single Parent Experience
Instill confidence in your role as a single parent; re-focus expectations for managing multiple roles; identify creative communication strategies as a single parent; and locate sources of support.
When Parents Disagree
Identify issues and situations that trigger parental disagreements; understand the reasons for disagreeing, including the myths of parenting; and learn strategies for working out our differences, developing a team approach and reducing stress.
Shaken Baby Syndrome
Learn how to identify this form of child abuse; what causes it; recognize symptoms; effects, prevention and treatment strategies; and locate resources.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Define SIDS and learn to reduce risk; learn how to encourage safe sleep practices; promoting awareness.
Pediatric CPR/First Aid
Learn appropriate emergency response skills; prevent and treat childhood injury; strategies for the care of infants and children. Adult care techniques are included. You will receive a combined Infant/Child CPR & First Aid cared with a two year expiration date. not available in self-study format.
